Douglas,
I just accepted your connection, and want to say thanks for the encouragement. I am very critical of my own work, and find myself envying the writing of others. David McGill is one of the people I think of as good.
It sure feels good to have someone make the effort to say they think I am. Thanks.
Now, for a question, I see that you are interested in Ceramics and Teaching. I am in need of a modeling medium that is reusable, and inexpensive. I want to mock up some fairly simple shapes, that I can then use as patterns for molds. I am fabricating a set of replacement saddlebags and fairings for a 1988 Goldwing Motorcycle.
I think that low grade ceramic clay might be the right medium, I could model the part, plaster coat it then remove the clay and use the resulting mold to produce a functional fiberglass finished product. (I might even be able to sell the finished product to other Goldwing owners) Problem is, the clay used in Ceramics is costly, and fragile, though it is reusable and easy to work with. I think Ceramic Clay is much more refined that what I need, terra-cotta would work, but where can I get a cubic yard or so of terra-cotta? Or, about that quantity of really cheap modeling clay? It is not urgent, what I already have functions, I just want "custom and unique" to get around on.
